My job here was On-Call Surgical Registrar (ENT/General Surgery/urology)

Let me start by saying that the training I received at this hospital was excellent. I worked closely with some great consultants who went out of their way to ensure I got great surgical exposure to a diverse range of operations.

However...

The admin setup at the hospital was a total FARCE!! I worked an average of 90 hours per week on a 1 in 3 rota. When I first commenced work, the admin staff had not completed the formalities correctly despite repeatedly telling me they had and as a result I was faced with weeks of completely unnecessary disruption.

The rota was seldom fixed for more than 2 weeks in advance and the job required that I covered so many departments that I would regularly work 14 hour shifts with absolutely no break at all. Despite numerous "discussions," the management’s approach remained frustratingly indifferent. The severe lack of staff meant that it was nearly impossible to organise any leave. Even following the prescribed procedure and getting assurances from the correct individuals was no guarantee that it was certainty.

I am trying to ensure this is a balanced review. The problem is when you are treated so badly, it is very difficult to highlight anything positive. I would encourage anyone taking up this position to be vigilant in their organisation and ENSURE every last detail is backed up in writing.

Basically, if you want to earn loads of overtime, be worked into the ground in a seriously flawed system, have no life and be at the mercy of inadequately trained, non-medical, admin staff then is the place for you. That said however, consultants were very supportive and there were plenty of training opportunities.

We lived in very centre of Sydney. The hospital was 25-40 mins easy drive past the airport on the "Eastern Distributor" (motorway). Usually I was going in the opposite direction to the traffic but if I ever got caught in it then the journey could take twice as long. Also, in order to get home the fastest way I would often pay the $4.00 toll as this would take 15mins off the journey.

We absolutely loved living in Sydney and if we were to do the whole thing again then I would definitely live in the heart of Sydney and not closer to the hospital. You just have to be prepared to pay a premium. If you want to live closer to the hospital then Cronulla would be a good choice!
