Which Hospital? 1 Year, 1 Month ago Karma: 0
Hi everyone, I am an F2 in Exeter wanting to move to Oz at the end of the year. Ideally I would like to work in central Melbourne but have had no joy as yet. I have been approached by Maroondah and Angliss, but they seem an hour away from the coast and CBD. Does anyone know anything about these hospitals, and would it be possible to live near the CBD or coast and commute?
The other option was Gosford in NSW, but again that is far from Sydney CBD.
Really need to make my mind up as to where to go so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Hi there - welcome to the forum!!

Not too sure about the Melbourne hospitals but if it's coastal living you want I can ABSOLUTELY guarantee you won't be able to beat Gosford - well actually Gosford is the hospital but everyone lives in Terrigal. A finer place to live - you would struggle to find. There's HEAPS of info on the forum and under destinations (in fact it is the only destination... until we role out our new website).

hope that helps
Iain

Re:Which Hospital? 11 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi again. Well have been offered positions at both the Alfred in Melbourne ( Critical Care) and Sir Charles Gairdner in Perth (Relief work then CCU at Hollywood Private Hospital)- where should I go?!
Have been to Melbourne before and loved it but never been to Perth. Worried about the bad press the Victorian Medical Board have had re pay/hours etc.
Basically want to come over and relax for a year by a beach! Not much chance of that I know! Love beaches, shops, bars and restaurants. Want somewhere I can live by the beach and not too expensive.
Any advice would be great.

hi there - sorry for the slow reply. We've contacted a few drs who live in Perth so you can get it straight from the "horse's mouth"

It depends what job you'd like to do as well. If you are coming for the beach lifestyle where you want to surf lots, then Gosford is the best place, followed by the Melbourne Hospitals (preferably Geelong - I can't say much about the others). Your next best bet would be Bunbury in WA, which is two hours south of Perth. You'd be best off doing emergency as well, as you're guaranteed six days off a fortnight and surfing in the week is much better than at weekends when it gets crowded.

If you're a kitesurfer, then any of the Perth hospitals or Bunbury would be the way to go. I'd actually try Fremantle before Royal Perth or Sir Charles as it's more laid back, but any are good for what you'd be looking for.

If you'd like to be by the beach, but aren't into watersports and want weekends and a city life, then Melbourne is the best city in Australia. Do a ward job (medicine, paeds, O&G - whatever you do) and work in one of the Melbourne or Sydney (Manly probably best) hospitals.

If you're on orthopod or a surgeon, you'll struggle to get a job out here straight off and even if you do it's a pretty difficult lifestyle.

Pay wise, WA is better than NSW which is better than Melbourne(worst pay in Oz).

If you want to do emergency, or rather could tolerate it (there's no four hour rule, so you can sort out patients), then you'll pretty much get a job anywhere in Oz.

Hope this helps. Good luck
