Leaving Australia - Tax rebates 4 Years ago Karma: 0
not that it's anything you want to think about when you're planning your trip out here but for the majority of us who aren't swept away by the romance and lure of the place who want to sort out getting money back...it might be an idea to have the odd link to financial services-y people who can help in getting tax back at the end of time here.

A friendly guy to use is Matt Rutter ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) he's based in terrigal above subway and is very experienced with people like us so can advise on what is and isn't rebatable....

For those cheap skates who don't want to shell out about $100 for his service it can be done fairly simply (so I'm told) online, but people might need some guidance on filling out the form - as to what they can claim for etc....

Hi gingerabb

We're just in the process of finalising something that will solve all the tax problems for overseas doctors. Everything should be in place about two weeks from now.

Couple of things you should be aware of:
1) It is a legal requirement to fill in a tax return even as an overseas doctor
2) We would advise doctors to see a tax specialist... there are many many many additional areas that overseas doctors can claim
3) As for the $100... well a hundred to get a few thousand back in tax seems like money well spent to me!!!

Cheers

Hi everyone,

You can also get some information from the Australian Tax Office website. The link is http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/pathway.asp?pc=001/002/012&mfp=001&mnu=4201#001_002_012 and then click on the leaving Australia button to bring up some options.

For people going back to New Zealand, the rules are slightly different than for other countries. The assumption is that Kiwis are likely to fly across the Tasman multiple times

Hope this helps.
