NON area of need Jobs 3 Years, 1 Month ago Karma: 0
Hi - Just wondering how difficult it is to get a job in posts that are not designated area of need? Am interested in registrar jobs in infectious diseases which are probably only available in the bigger hospitals. Does anyone have any advice?

I've just seen some Registrar jobs in infectious diseases advertised on the Western Australian government jobs site. If not try the Queensland job sites as well. Basically, all jobs starting in January are advertised around this time of year so it's best to keep checking.

As for non-area of need jobs- I think it's do-able as several friends here have moved onto Central Sydney hospital jobs (eg ICU reg, Radiation Oncology Reg). I'm applying for Paeds training jobs in the big hospitals so I'll let you know if I run into visa problems. Basically your employer has to sponsor your visa and recommend you for registration with the health board so as long as they agree to do that I think you'd be ok.

Possum,

Could you be kind enough to either post on the forum or send me a list of said jobs sites so we can set them up as a useful resource on the site.

Cheers kid

No worries, the way to find jobs in WA is to go to the WA government website and select medical officer roles:
www.jobs.wa.gov.au http://www.health.qld.gov.au/workforus/ http://www7.health.nsw.gov.au/healthjobs/ http://www.health.vic.gov.au/jobs/

Most of the resident posts in WA have now closed for applications but try anyway as we did and they were v relaxed about late applications. They try and favour Aussies for the jobs but I was quietly told that they never fill them all and then they consider overseas applicants.

QLD jobs have also officially closed for next year but try!

NSW jobs are open for application until the end of August and there are some good ones.

Google anywhere I haven't listed. In the middle of job applications so have all the info today!

Good luck x

Hi Ciara,

You may be interested in this new review of Joh Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. The chap talks about infectious diseases. http://www.travellingdoctors.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=302&Itemid=421
If you have any queries then post them here or on the Newcastle thread.

Cheers
Iain

Another hospital has been added in the review section - one in Queensland and he mentions "tropical diseases galore"

hope this helps
