Best advice - don't do it. It really takes some getting used to. Many roads/tunnels/bridges are toll roads and you have to have electronic tags that automatically debit your account. If you accidentally end up on one of these roads then you must phone the Road Traffic association (RTA) and pay over the phone within 24 hours otherwise you end getting charged!

Actually, driving in Sydney is not too bad overall. Compare it with driving around London or Birmingham and it'll come off favourably. Make sure to check the map first. The harbour bridge/tunnel is $3.00 southbound (free northbound), the Eastern Distributor is $4.50 and not worth it unless you are in a hurry to get from the eastern suburbs to the city in peak time. Some roads, like the Lane Cove Tunnel are automatic pay only. Don't know much about it as it's not a part of Sydney I've explored.

Don't be dissuaded, though! Sydney's a great place and a car is a good way to get around.

lol you should try driving in Sri Lanka or India

But if you living in Sydney or Gosford, definitely worth getting an E-tag...

Just got to the RTA website, an set it up online... easy as..!

Also has some useful info about roads an license etc..

Regarding the license :
the website states:

'You can use your existing licence for up to three months, after which you must have a NSW licence in order to drive a vehicle or ride a motorcycle.'

There are various other rules about 'P' platers etc.. just have a read of the webiste.

Enjoy and safe driving

I agree with the license thing. I was pulled over by cops last week for not dipping lights for oncoming traffic and got a $90 fine! they weren't impressed with my UK license. I told them it was valid until the expiry. Not sure if they bought it, but I went out and got a new NSW license the next day!
