Mobile Phones E-mail
These days, mobile phones are a fact of life. When you first arrive you will need to get a local sim card as soon as possible as international roaming fees are prohibitively expensive. You are unlikely to get a fantastic deal when you first arrive so the best advice is go with th esimplest option straight away. You can change the details later on. Read on to learn more.

Pay-as-you-go/PrePaid: It is possible to simply get a Sim card for AU$30 and it comes with $30 credit  (ie it is free). This is usually the easiest option providing your handset is compatible (see below). The most important issue is to establish a phone number as you can always change networks/plans/contracts and keep that number. Some of the handsets  that come with pre-pay are very average indeed (see below).

Contracts: You need a bank account and an address before you can get a mobile on contract. We can help you get a bank account before you arrive read more...

Handsets: If you are coming from the UK any Vodafone handset is compatible but ORANGE phones are locked to Orange and require unlocking before they can be used (this could cost up to AU$60 and is not guaranteed to be successful). Some doctors have managed to find codes on the internet to do this. If you come across any relavant infomration then please post it on the forum so others can benefit.

GPRS: If you are used to checking emails, booking tickets or getting directions using GPRS tehn you are in for a big shock. GPRS is outrageously expensive! Best advice is avoid using it.

Update: In upcoming months Travelling Docotrs will have some exciting news regarding mobiles. We are actively seeking to eliminate the hassle of trying to get a mobile when you first arrive.
