Always be careful if you want to work in ED to check whether a hospital is 'trauma bypass' or not. If trauma's not your thing then this is fine, but it does bias your workload toward the geriatric and medical.

Ryde is the poor little brother of Royal North Shore Hospital, and it shows. Largely underfunded, you quite often work with little or no senior support. Training is great in some specialities such as anaesthetics, but very limited in others - ED, ICU etc.

Unlike some of the similar sized hospitals in Sydney Ryde has none of the advantages like a beach, view, etc, and does take a good 40 minutes to get into Sydney. Trains only run until just before midnight, and hospital accomodation is terrible.

On the positive side, the nurses are lovely to work with, but more and more of them are jumping ship, frustrated by the hospital administration.

If you have a choice, there are better places to spend your time in Oz.
