Wyong Hospital is in the middle of refurbishment. Construction of the new $86-million Wyong Hospital building began in 2003 and is now complete. Wards, services and departments are being accommodated in the new building in stages with the relocation due to be finished by the end of February. When fully operational Wyong Hospital will have 319 beds (this includes 14 nursery cots), increasing from 210 beds. Features of the new hospital include a new Emergency Department, new medical and surgical wards, six new Operating Theatres, an extended Medical Imaging, Pathology and Pharmacy Service, a new Outpatients Clinics area and a High Dependency Unit. The new services, beds and facilities will significantly reduce the need for patients to travel outside the area for care.

They've completed the new emergency department at Wyong now. It's a massive area to cover, with three separate areas for majors, minors and kids. The place itself is good to work, nice staff and relaxed environment. However, for most of the people who come over to the central coast of New South Wales to work, they will be living in Gosford, Terrigal or Avoca. This means a horrible drive to work every day, which if you are doing ward work (which is not recommended at Wyong - really sick patients get transferred to Gosford and it's general medicine boredom that always keeps you late)for 10 weeks or 3 months gets very wearing.

The food is crap. The staff cafe is awful, while the public cafe is better than Gosford, but overpriced as a result.

With regards emergency work, there is more fun to be had at Gosford. More trauma's, more procedures and better senior cover at night. For guys coming over just for 6 months of emergency work however, the more chilled out nature of Wyong is good for a break from the relative chaos of Gosford, and in fact if adrenaline is not your thing and general practice is, the minors section at Wyong is the best place for you. Patients can't afford or don't want to spend money on their GP, so they come to you.

It's a matter of opinion but I work as a resident at both Gos and Wong and prefer Gosford.

Wyong does tend to be a little more relaxed as its patient numbers aren't as high and it isn't a trauma receiving hospital. That said it can still get mentally busy. The current refurbishments mean facilities aren't what they could be - no surgical cover overnight - patients need to be transferred to Gosford. So things will probably change for the better

Roster-wise it is managed by the same people in Gos so issues are the same there.

It is still a fun place to work, but is slightly further afield than Gos and when doing nights (only in ED) you have to cover the wards as well - but that is because it is generally quieter than Gos.

Working in Gosford generally means you'll be placed in Wyong as well. As a resident (SHO) this is the norm, whereas as a reg you only get to do the odd shift when they're desparate or for locums.

Wyong is a little further out than Gosford, but in general is a little bit more sociable and sedate to work at than Gosford.

The nursing staff tend to be on the senior side, and as such make them a fantastically helpful asset in your work. Consultant cover is 8am to 12pm weekdays, with on-call cover at weekends but 24/7 middle grade presence (as Gosford).

There does tend to be a large proportion of 'backpacker docs' on the Central Coast (Gosford and Wyong) as they don't appear to be able to recruit enough Aussies. But, this works to your advantage if you're after a job!
